CAIRO: The April 6 Youth Movement said on Monday that 26 of their members were arrested after they took part in a “spontaneous” march in Cairo.
The march, which took place on Sunday evening, coincided with the launch of the Youth Movement’s “Black Constituency” campaign last week. The campaign aims to persuade Egyptian voters not to vote for candidates who either won seats in the 2005 election through fraud, or who failed to make any positive changes in their constituency.
According to the April 6 Youth Movement’s website, the march also condemned inflation and low wages, with participants distributing leaflets reading: “Think carefully. Don’t elect someone who assists theft and corruption. Think carefully. Don’t take part in election fraud, because this is about your future and the future of your children.”
Arrested marchers were placed in central security trucks before subsequently being released later the same evening.
