CAIRO: African Football Confederation president Issa Hayatou was released from hospital on Friday after falling ill at a World Cup conference in Cairo.

Hayatou, 64, said he felt ill late Thursday and was taken to hospital in the Egyptian capital for tests. He was kept in overnight for observation.

At the World Cup conference, world football officials were meeting to analyze the 2010 World Cup — the first in Africa.

Hayatou did not attend the conference’s closing ceremony later Friday. A CAF official said the president was in good condition but was still tired. CAF secretary general Hicham El Amrani took over Hayatou’s duties in his absence.

Hayatou, of Cameroon, has been CAF president for 23 years. He is a FIFA vice president and member of the World Cup organizing committee.
