Topping the list of bidders for Egypt steel licenses is an Egyptian and Turkish consortium, Steel Guru reported.
According to the bidding documents, the applications are split into two categories. The first is one where licenses are to given to investors who haven’t been awarded any licenses in 2008. These companies include Ezz Steel, Bishai, Suez, Tiba, ArcelorMittal and Kharafi Steel.
The other category shall be awarded licenses only in case there is some surplus capacity from the first one, Steel Guru reported.
Head of the Industrial Development Authority Amr Assal said that in case the applications are more than the allocated licenses, eligible companies shall enter into a public auction. Companies are entitled to apply to rebar and or billet production licenses at the same time. The maximum capacity of each license shall be 500,000 tons.
Assal said that the needed amounts of natural gas and electricity were available to holders of new permits, adding that priority would be given to existing factories that had not yet received permits and to new companies.
