CAIRO: Dozens of protesters rallied just a few steps away from the Supreme Electoral Commission (SEC) headquarters in Heliopolis on Sunday, calling for the dissolution of the parliament amid rampant vote rigging and fraud in the People’s Assembly (PA) elections.

The demonstration which kicked off after 6 pm was organized by members of the April 6 Youth Movement and the National Association for Change.

Protesters tried to get through the police cordon in front of the SEC headquarters, which resulted in clashes between demonstrators and state security forces.

The fighting did not last long, however, as the demonstrators were quickly surrounded by security forces.

The protesters chanted slogans against the alleged elections violations, most of which accused the SEC of rigging the elections for the benefit of the ruling National Democratic Party.

Demonstrators held up banners that read, “These elections do not represent us, they are invalid” and “Fraud by the hands of police.”

“We call for dissolving the parliament and holding new free and fair elections in line with [former IAEA chief Mohamed] ElBaradei’s seven demands for change and reform,” spokesperson for the April 6 Youth Movement Mohammed Adel told Daily News Egypt.

ElBaradei’s seven demands included international and judicial supervision of the now controversial PA elections.
