ALEXANDRIA: Egypt’s state news agency says an Italian cargo ship loaded with toxic chemicals capsized in the port of Alexandria after incurring storm damage.
The Jolly Amaranto broke down off Egypt’s shores earlier this week amid a torrential rain storm that lashed out across the eastern Mediterranean Sea, forcing the ship to be towed into port.
MENA reported that the crew was rescued after the ship overturned on Tuesday morning.
Containers carrying toxic materials like paint and printer inks fell into the water, the report said.
The exact cause of the ship’s problems is still under investigation.
