Egypt, the world’s largest wheat importer, has bought 180,000 tons of soft wheat from the United States and Argentina for March 1-10 shipment on a free on board basis, the main government wheat buyer said on Tuesday.
Nomani Nomani, vice chairman of the General Authority for Supply Commodities (GASC), gave the following breakdown of the purchases:
– 60,000 tons of Argentine soft wheat from Cargill at $315/ton, with agreed freight costs at $37
– 60,000 tons of Argentine soft wheat from Venus at $320/ton, with freight costs at $40.15
– 60,000 tons of US soft red winter wheat from Bunge at $322.50/ton, with freight costs at $34.14
Another tender to purchase hard wheat for March 1-10 shipment was cancelled, Nomani said without providing reasons.
Since the start of the 2010/11 fiscal year on July 1, GASC has purchased about 4.29 million tons of French, US, Canadian, Australian and Argentine wheat.
In the fiscal year that ended on June 30, GASC purchased some 5.53 million tons of US, French, Russian, German, Kazakh and Canadian wheat at international tenders.
