CAIRO: Arab League Undersecretary General Ahmed bin Helli has confirmed that Iraq will host the next Arab League summit — the country’s first in 20 years.

Arab League Secretary-General Amr Moussa will travel to Baghdad on Saturday to discuss preparations for the meeting.

Bin Helli told reporters Wednesday that the league was committed to its decision in Libya last year that Iraq should hold the next meeting in March.

It will be the first major event held in Iraq since the US-led invasion in 2003.

Iraqi officials had said early that Baghdad was going ahead with the preparations to host the 22-member organization summit despite misgivings by many countries over the security situation.

Iraq last hosted the summit in May 1990 and three months later Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait.
