LAUSANNE, Switzerland: Switzerland’s supreme court ordered Egypt goalkeeper Essam El Hadary on Wednesday to pay FIFA 12,000 Swiss francs ($12,500) in legal costs over his failed appeal against a ban for breaking his contract.
The Swiss Federal Tribunal said El Hadary must also pay court costs of 10,000 Swiss francs, in addition to $796,500 compensation previously awarded to former club Al-Ahly by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
El Hadary has lost several rulings at FIFA, CAS and the supreme court since walking out on Al-Ahly midseason to join Swiss club Sion in 2008.
The 38-year-old goalkeeper will complete serving a four-month FIFA suspension next month.
El Hadary can then play for his latest club, Al-Merreikh of Sudan.
FIFA said in a statement it was "pleased to note" that the decisions of its disputes panel — which first ruled on the case in June 2009 — were unchanged.
Sion received a one-year ban from signing players, which is being served during the current January transfer window and will continue into the summer offseason trading period.
Swiss federal judges ordered Sion to pay 6,000 Swiss francs toward FIFA’s legal costs and 5,000 Swiss francs to the court.
