CAIRO: Egypt, the world’s biggest wheat importer, said on Monday grain cargoes were arriving at ports as scheduled and wheat was reaching points of sale to ordinary Egyptians.
Egypt has been in tumult over the past week with days of popular protests against three decades of rule by President Hosni Mubarak.
"We are moving with our purchases as planned. We purchased big amounts of wheat and we have stocks that cover six months until the local purchasing season begins from April to June," Nomani Nomani, vice chairman of the General Authority for Supply Commodities (GASC) told Reuters.
"(This) which means we will have stocks that cover about 10 months … Ships are arriving to ports as scheduled and we have storage that absorbs the quantities being shipped."
He also said that "the state is ensuring movement of the purchases inside the country and into points of sale."
