TOKYO: Nissan Motor Co restarted production at a small factory in Egypt on Sunday after shutting it following the outbreak of protests in Cairo, a company official said.

Japan’s second-biggest automaker, which assembles the X-Trail, Sunny models at the knock-down factory in Giza, near the capital, suspended operations on Jan. 30.

"The plant was closed out of concern for the safety of our workers," said Mitsuru Yonekawa, the spokesman. "We have not received any reports of damages."

The plant, which produces 10,000 vehicles a year, makes the X-Trail sport-utility vehicle, Sunny sedan and pickup trucks, according to Yokohama-based Nissan.
