CAIRO: Hundreds of lawyers protested at their syndicate on Thursday, calling for the resignation of its head Hamdy Khalifa and its deputy Hussein Gammal.
“We want to clean the lawyers’ syndicate from what’s left of the National Democratic Party (NDP),” lawyer Ali Soleiman told Daily News Egypt.
The protestors accused Khalifa and other officials in the syndicate — who are also former MPs affiliated with the NDP — of being pawns in the hands of the ousted regime and contributing first hand in its corruption.
“Khalifa’s statements during the revolution were a disgrace,” lawyer Haitham Omar told Daily News Egypt.
Omar said that the lawyers had opened the syndicate’s doors to the protesters since Jan. 25 and offered them legal advice and defended those who were assaulted and arrested.
“But Khalifa used to order the workers to close the syndicate doors,” Omar said. “We want to rid our country of all corruption,”
“We support the end of the NDP and anyone who backed the former regime,” member of the council of the lawyers’ syndicate representing youth in Qena and Luxor, Mahmoud Khatib, said.
