DAMASCUS: Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad on Thursday met a top Egyptian military intelligence envoy for talks on bilateral ties, the official SANA news agency reported.
Assad met Egyptian General Murad Mohamed Mowafi in the capital for talks on "the mutual desire to strengthen cooperation and coordination between the two countries," SANA said in a brief statement. It did not elaborate.
The meeting comes one week after Assad said he was ready to "cooperate" with Cairo and "wished success" to Field Marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawi, who heads the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces.
The council has been running Egypt since president Hosni Mubarak resigned under massive popular pressure on Feb. 11.
Syria had strained ties with Mubarak for years, most recently over political turmoil in Lebanon.
