CAIRO: An investigation into the wealth of late National Democratic Party MP Kamal El-Shazly was launched in the latest crackdown on former government officials and ministers.
Deputy Minister of Justice for the Illicit Gains Office, Assem El-Gohary, said that the authority received reports regarding El-Shazly from the Administrative Control Authority and they will start investigating his fortune as well as that of his family, he said in a press statement Thursday.
A judicial committee has been formed to handle the investigation into the fortunes of former officials and ministers who served in the old regime, as well as the ousted president and his family.
On Monday, the committee will be listening to the testimony of a member of the Administrative Control Authority on the reports compiled on El-Shazly and former minister of housing Mohamed Ibrahim Soliman, said El-Gohary.
Furthermore, El-Gohary confirmed that his office will receive reports on the wealth of Secretary General of the National Democratic Party and head of the Shoura Council Safwat El-Sherif; former chief of the presidential staff Zakaria Azmy and People’s Assembly speaker Fathi Sorour and all their families.
El-Shazly died last November, weeks before the People’s Assembly elections took place and in which he was a candidate for the NDP.
