VIENNA: A US diplomatic cable on the WikiLeaks website indicates Washington was unhappy with Mohamed ElBaradei in his last months as head of the International Atomic Energy Agency.

The cable discloses differences between ElBaradei and the US chief delegate to the IAEA on the agency’s probes of Iran and Syria and on Middle East politics.

The cable, posted Friday, was written in January 2009 by Gregory L. Schulte, then chief US delegate to the agency.

In it, he says ElBaradei will likely remain "part of the problem" because he supports the views of developing countries on the Middle East and other issues.

ElBaradei’s last IAEA term ended in 2009. He is now a leading driver of Egypt’s political reforms and a potential presidential candidate there.
