US actor Nicolas Cage has been arrested in the southern city of New Orleans "after getting drunk" and having a heated argument with his wife in the French Quarter, police said.

Cage, who won an Oscar for his portrayal of a suicidal alcoholic in the 1995 film "Leaving Las Vegas," was arrested after officers approached him while he argued with his wife on the street.

The 47-year-old star had been "getting drunk … in the French Quarter," New Orleans police officer Garry Flot said in a statement, referring to the neighborhood famous for its lively nightlife.

"He and his wife were standing in front of a residence that he insisted was the property the couple was renting," Flot said.

"She disagreed, and Cage grabbed her by the upper arm and pulled her to what he believed was the correct address."

Cage then struck vehicles and began to enter a taxi. Witnesses flagged police officers who "immediately observed that Cage was heavily intoxicated, and ordered him out of the cab, which prompted Cage to start yelling," Flot said.

He noted that Cage’s wife had no apparent injuries.

The officers arrested the actor on a charge of domestic abuse battery as well as disturbing the peace.

Cage posted $11,000 bond and was released, according to documents from the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s office. A court date was scheduled for May 31.

Alice Kim Cage is the actor’s third wife and they have one child together. His ex-wives are actress Patricia Arquette and Lisa Marie Presley, the daughter of the late Elvis Presley.

Cage, the nephew of director Francis Ford Coppola, also starred in "Adaptation" and the "National Treasure" franchise.
