JOHANNESBURG: The Confederation of African Football has fined Egyptian club Zamalek $80,000 and ordered it to play behind closed doors following a violent pitch invasion by fans in an African Champions League game in Cairo.
CAF says on Wednesday that Zamalek is guilty of violating four articles of the body’s disciplinary code in the match against Tunisia’s Club Africain on April 2, when its supporters tried to attack the visiting players and referee.
CAF ruled Zamalek will play its next four home games in CAF competitions without supporters, with two of those games suspended.
Zamalek’s was one of 10 sanctions handed out at Tuesday’s CAF disciplinary body meeting in Johannesburg, with Senegal fined $5,000 for a pitch invasion in an African Cup of Nations qualifier against Cameroon.
