CAIRO: Egypt has decided no longer to put its clocks forward by an hour in spring, state news agency MENA reported Wednesday.

"The Council of Ministers under (Prime Minister) Essam Sharaf has decided … to cancel" the daylight-saving measure, MENA said, without elaborating.

Sharaf said in a televised speech on Monday that many Egyptians do not see the purpose of changing the time twice a year.

Media also quoted expert opinion that the switch was not really effective in terms of saving energy.

The switch to daylight-saving time was instituted in several countries following the oil shock of 1973, in order to save energy by reducing lighting needs in the late afternoon.
