Train shooter transferred to psychiatric hospital

CAIRO: The Minya State Security Emergency Court decided to transfer a police deputy accused of shooting at train passengers last January, to a psychiatric hospital to determine his “mental status.”

Amer Ashour Abdel-Zaher is accused of boarding a Cairo-bound train on Jan. 11 and shooting at passengers, killing a 70-year old Christian, Fathy Mosad Eid Ghetas, and wounded five of his family.

The court ordered the evaluation of Abdel-Zaher’s mental health during a 45-day stay at a psychiatric hospital, based on his lawyer’s request. The hearing was adjourned to Aug. 2.

He is facing charges of premeditated murder, attempted murder of five, using violence to terrorize citizens, endangering the security of the society, intentionally endangering the safety of public transport and intentional sabotage of public assets owned by the Railway Authority.
