AL-ARISH: Police say a bus carrying Egyptian pilgrims to Mecca and a van collided head-on, killing 12 people and injuring three others.
A police officer said the accident occurred Thursday on a single-lane road in Egypt’s Sinai peninsula.
The pilgrims were en route to Mecca, Saudi Arabia, which is Islam’s holiest city.
The officer spoke on condition of anonymity because he is not authorized to brief the media.
Accidents are common in Egypt because of bad roads and poor enforcement of traffic rules. An estimated 8,000 people die in accidents annually.
