CAIRO: Prominent Islamic thinker Mohamed Selim Al-Awa said Saturday that he might consider running for the presidency when the laws governing the elections are announced and the door for receiving candidatures is opened.
"If the national duty calls me, I am not the one who will ignore it when it is the right time and when the legal and constitutional framework is announced," Al-Awa said.
He said in his weekly lecture at Egypt Association for Culture and Dialogue that the post would be a huge responsibility.
Al-Awa’s statement came in response to calls by activists and youth supporters for him to run for president in the pending elections, slated for the end of 2011.
"I dealt with Al-Awa in many places and know how he thinks and his way of solving problems and see that he is the best candidate for the post of presidency," said Ahmed Hamed, coordinator of The National Campaign for nominating Al-Awa for Presidency.
Hamed said that the campaign is now collecting signatures from citizens in 15 governorates and once they reach 30,000, they will present it to Al-Awa.
Al-Awa is a prominent lawyer and scholar of Islamic jurisprudence.
