Reform to cost $25 bln over 5 years, says Tunisia finance min

DEAUVILLE: Tunisia’s plans for a range of reforms will cost in the region of $25 billion over the next five years, Finance Minister Jalloul Ayed said on Friday.

He was attending a meeting in France of G8 leaders that pledged to support new Arab democracies in North Africa, starting with Tunisia and Egypt.

"We have put in place an economic program which is ambitious. The ulimate objective is to create jobs for the 700,000 unemployed, many of them young poeple," he said.

He spoke of plans for public sector reform, financial sector reform and education reforms and cited a cost estimate of $5 billion per year, or $25 billion over five years.

The G8 meeting took place in the northern resort town of Deauville.
