ROME: Italy and Russia called on Thursday for a "humane and fair" outcome for former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak, who faces trial in August, Italian media reported, quoting diplomatic sources.
The comments came during talks between Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and US Vice President Joseph Biden in Rome, where world leaders marked Italy’s Republic Day.
The three leaders also discussed their concerns about the situation in Syria and attempts to mediate an end to the conflict in Libya, the reports said.
Mubarak is to face trial on Aug. 3 on charges of ordering the killing of protesters and fraud. His two sons, Alaa and Gamal, are facing trial on the same day for charges of using their father’s position for financial gain.
The 83-year-old deposed leader has been in custody in hospital since April 13 after reportedly suffering a heart attack during questioning.
On Tuesday, the public prosecutor said in a statement that Mubarak was too ill to be moved from hospital to prison and was suffering from "episodes of unconsciousness" and "an irregular heartbeat".
