CAIRO: Former People’s Assembly speaker Fathi Sorour was remanded in custody for another 15 days Sunday on charges of being involved in the Feb. 2 attack on Tahrir Square protesters, known as “Battle of the Camel.”
Chancellor Mahmoud Al-Sabrout, investigation judge in the case, also remanded former MP Mohamed Ouda and Mahmoud Abo Al-Leil, office manager of the disbanded NDP figure Ibrahim Kamel, for 15 days.
Sorour was charged with inciting violence and hiring thugs from Sayyeda Zeinab to attack protesters.
He previously denied the charges and said that as a man of the law he cannot be involved in such a case.
Sorour’s supporters attacked photographers taking pictures of him while entering the Ministry of Justice, where investigations were held.
Meanwhile, the Illicit Gains Authority dismissed Sunday steel mogul Ahmed Ezz’s wife, Abla Fawzy, and his daughter after interrogating with them about the sources of their wealth.
