CAIRO: Authorities at Cairo airport on Thursday detained an Egyptian national suspected of belonging to Al-Qaeda in Yemen, an airport official told AFP.
Rabie Abdullah, who was travelling under a false name, arrived on Thursday from Yemen and was stopped by authorities at Cairo airport, the official said.
Abdullah had been travelling with his wife and three children.
The official said Abdullah, who was sentenced by an Egyptian court in absentia to five years in a terror case, had been living in Yemen and is accused of belonging to the Al-Qaeda group there.
Yemen is the home of Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, an affiliate of Ayman Al-Zawahri’s militant network.
Al-Qaeda on Thursday named Zawahri, an Egyptian surgeon, to succeed Osama bin Laden who was killed by US commandos in a May 2 raid in Pakistan.
