CAIRO: Dozens of protesters marched from Tahrir Square to the Prosecutor General’s office at the High Court building early Wednesday, demanding his resignation.
The protesters called for fair and swift trials of those accused of murdering and injuring the martyrs during the January 25 revolution.
“We will get [the martyrs’] rights or we will die like them,” the protesters chanted.
They accused Prosecutor General Abdel Meguid Mahmoud of corruption and collaboration with the remnants of the former regime against the martyrs’ families.
“How much did you take to sell free and [fair trials],” the protesters shouted, questioning Mahmoud’s integrity.
Mahmoud’s office was surrounded by military police to prevent protesters from entering the building.
“You should learn the lesson from the interior ministry,” the people shouted, addressing the military police. They were referring to the ministry’s constant violations against the people during the rule of ousted President Hosni Mubarak.
Clashes between protesters and police forces during the uprising which led to Mubarak’s ouster, left at least 846 dead and 6,467 injured nationwide, according to a report issued by an official fact-finding mission.
Since the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces took over, the military police has been involved in forcibly clearing sit-ins. No clashes, however, were reported on Wednesday.
The protesters held a brief sit-in at the Prosecutor General’s office before returning to Tahrir Square. They vowed to return on Thursday in larger numbers to hold a longer sit-in and prevent Mahmoud from entering his office.
