JOHANNESBURG: An Egyptian academic says diverse communities can find integration through social networking, including platforms such as Facebook and Twitter.
Ismail Serageldin, director of Egypt’s Alexandria Library, says the world is on the cusp of a global revolution to be led by youth and technology. But he warned that information sharing must also be complemented by wisdom and experience if it is to strengthen social cohesion.
Serageldin was giving the ninth Nelson Mandela Annual Lecture Saturday, organized by the Nelson Mandela Foundation to foster dialogue around key social issues.
Serageldin also celebrated the “Arab Spring”, which he said was driven by a demand for freedom and human rights, likening it to the overthrow of apartheid in South Africa.
