JERUSALEM: Egyptian forces, shooting at migrants trying to cross the Israeli border, accidentally hit an Israeli army vehicle on Friday, the Israeli military said.

There were no Israeli casualties and no reports that any of the immigrant infiltrators were hit, a military spokeswoman said.

"One vehicle was lightly damaged in the incident and there were no injuries," she told AFP.

Egyptian forces regularly shoot at African migrants who pay smugglers for passage into the Jewish state to look for work and to escape poverty, and many have been killed.

The Egypt-Israel border has become a major transit route for economic migrants, asylum-seekers and drug-smugglers.

At least nine African migrant have been killed so far this year, according to Egyptian figures. More than 30 were killed last year, most shot by police.
