CAIRO: A delegation from the temporary committee running the Egyptian Trade Unions Federation (ETUF) met Tuesday with Deputy Prime Minister Ali Al-Selmy, to push for the syndicate freedoms law on which they hope to base the coming elections.
The committee held its first meeting Monday night and decided to review judicial rulings regarding the results of the syndicate committee elections to decide on the fate of the ETUF’s formation.
They also formed a committee to review the financial records of the ETUF and formed organizational boards affiliated with the ETUF such as the Labor Culture Organization and the Social Organization.
The committee further discussed preparations for the ETUF’s elections set for October and November.
The Cabinet’s decision to disband the ETUF’s board last week was welcomed by labor activists who have long criticized its affiliation with the former regime and demanded fostering a greater role for independent unions.
The ETUF’s board challenged the decision, saying it was illegal and that it violated international agreements that do not allow the interference of the executive authority in labor affairs.
