CAIRO: Online activists called for a second day of blogging about the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, on Friday Aug. 19.

The call – which bids for blogging about SCAF’s alleged violations against protesters – suggests that since SCAF is currently filling in the president’s post, it should be subject to people’s criticism.

The initiative includes posting five or more sentences criticizing the acts of violence committed by SCAF against the revolution and the revolutionaries on all participants’ personal accounts on social networks this Friday.

The call was initiated shortly after political activist and former member of the April 6 Youth Movement Asmaa Mahfouz was summoned to the Military Prosecution on charges of inciting violence and defaming the ruling military council.

Mahfouz was on Sunday released on LE 20,000 bail pending further investigations, angering activists and human rights organizations.

So far, the anti-SCAF blogging day is proving controversial. By time of press, there were 342 Facebook users expressing their will to participate through a dedicated event page, with several ridiculing and even attacking the initiative.

Disapproval of the initiative stems from the belief that it’s widening the already-existing rift between the people and the army and inviting further instability in the already fragile state of the country. Some opponents claim that SCAF is above criticism.

A different opinion implies that this initiative is the work of Islamists aiming to break up the unity between the people and the army and thus dissolve the supra-constitutional principles project.

This is the second time such a call is circulated. Last May, another anti-SCAF blogging day succeeded in breaking the fear barrier and media silence over criticizing SCAF, with about 400 blog posts published that day.
