GAZA CITY: Palestinian factions in Gaza on Sunday reached an "informal" accord on a truce in rocket attacks on Israel, an official of the Islamist movement Hamas told AFP.

"We have reached an informal agreement to establish a ceasefire from tonight on condition that Israel halts its attacks," the official said on condition of anonymity.

He did not specify an hour but said the truce would be officially announced on Monday, following a series of contacts, especially with Egypt.

As part of these contacts, General Amir Eshel, former head of the Israeli army’s planning department, travelled to Cairo with other Israeli officials, according to media reports in Israel.

The Hamas official said his movement called for Islamic Jihad to halt attacks after the radical organization claimed responsibility for firing two rockets against Israel on Sunday night.

Two Grad rockets were fired in the evening on the Gaza Strip against the city of Ashkelon in southern Israel, causing no injuries or damage, according to Israeli police.

"A rocket was intercepted … inflight, while another exploded in an unpopulated area in Ashkelon," according to a police spokesman.
