RAFAH: Egypt decided to close the Rafah border during the Eid El-Fitr holiday starting this Tuesday, a security official said.

The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the crossing will be reopened on Saturday, Sept. 3 at 9 am.

The closure of the only crossing into the Gaza Strip that bypasses Israel is aimed at giving workers on both sides of the border a holiday, he said.

The border has been open since early Monday and was scheduled to remain open until late at night to give a chance for more Palestinians to pass.

More than 900 crossed the border in both directions on Sunday.

The border is now operating under new conditions agreed upon after the Jan. 25 uprising that ousted president Hosni Mubarak, doubling the numbers of people using it every day.
