Al-ARISH: A security official denied Monday reports by Israel Radio claiming Israeli soldiers were shot at from inside Egypt near the border.
The high profile source, who was speaking on a customary condition of anonymity, said Egypt didn’t receive any official notification from Israel regarding the alleged shooting.
Following a triple attack on Israeli soldiers near the border last month, which left eight dead, six Egyptian soldiers were later shot dead by Israeli fire. Security has since been tightened on both sides of the border.
A public outcry over the shooting of the Egyptian soldiers has fueled demonstrations outside the Israeli embassy in Cairo, which culminated last Friday night with protesters storming part of the embassy.
There’s heavy security presence along the borders with Israel, especially near Eilat, where the shooting allegedly happened, the source said.
The source added that sometimes shots are fired in the air by gang members involved in human trafficking to the Israeli borders, as they scour the border for security patrols.
