CAIRO: Egypt’s military ruler Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi on Friday led the funeral of the son of late president Gamal Abdel Nasser who died Thursday, the official MENA agency reported.

Tantawi joined dozens of mourners including politicians and supporters of the late president for the funeral prayers of Khaled Abdel Nasser.

The son of the Arab nationalist leader was an outspoken critic of both his father’s successors Anwar Sadat and Hosni Mubarak.

In 1988, he was tried in absentia and later acquitted on charges of belonging to a secret leftist organization that was vehemently opposed to the 1979 peace treaty between Egypt and Israel.

In January and February, he joined protesters in Cairo’s Tahrir Square for mass rallies that brought the end of the Mubarak regime.
