CAIRO: Egypt’s Grand Mufti called on the country’s Muslims and Copts to fulfill their religious duties in combating sectarian tension and facing any attempts to harm Egypt’s unity.
In a Friday sermon he delivered in the governorate of Sohag, Mufti Ali Gomaa warned against “the enemies of the state” who aim at creating divisions and spreading fundamentalism.
Gomaa said that the people of Egypt owe it to their country to preserve its unity and that they should be fulfill their national and religious duties until it passes this critical phase.
He also explained that Prophet Mohamed called for protecting Egypt’s Copts and stressed through his teachings that harming any human being is akin to harming the prophet himself.
In his sermon, Gomaa said he is confident that those fueling sectarian tension and spreading chaos will never succeed, since history has proven that their calls are always in vain.
Gomaa also praised Egypt’s army, saying that history stands witness to their achievements and that they deserve our pride and respect.
He urged Egyptians to unite to show the world that their culture, civilization and religion will help with the transition into a civil state that promotes justice and equality.
