CAIRO: Reported crime rate has held steady in Egypt following the January 25 Revolution, in the midst of a security vacuum and rising fear, a Gallup study revealed.

In August 2011, only 8 percent of those surveyed reported money or property stolen from them or another household member within the last 12 months, compared to 18 percent in 2008 and 13 percent in 2009 and 2010.

Moreover, only 3 percent said they were mugged or assaulted within the last 12 months in June and August 2011, compared to 8, 4 and 7 percent in 2008, 2009 and 2010 respectively.

Meanwhile, 51 percent said they do not feel safe walking alone at night in the city or area they live, a number that increased from 16 percent in 2008 and 18 percent in 2010.

The Abu Dhabi Gallup Center’s results are based on face-to-face interviews with approximately 1,000 Egyptian adults, aged 15 and older, conducted from 2008 to 2011.
