CAIRO: Pope Shenouda met Monday with head of the ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) Field Marshal Hussein Tantawy and Intelligence Chief Murad Mowafi to discuss the latest developments in the aftermath of the Maspero clashes.
On Oct. 9, army forces violently crushed a mainly Coptic protest at Maspero, leaving 27 dead and over 300 injured.
Coptic sources told Daily News Egypt that they discussed the alleged calls to investigate the Maspero clashes by the international community, in addition to the church’s demands of issuing anti-discrimination laws and a law regulating the building of churches.
Unconfirmed reports said that a unified law for building houses of worship will be issued Tuesday.
SCAF also decided following the meeting to restore the burnt part of Aswan’s Marinab church, which had sparked the protests, as well as continue the church’s overall renovation.
This is the third meeting with SCAF regarding the Maspero clashes after a meeting between Shenouda and two SCAF members in the Cathedral followed by another meeting between SCAF and five bishops representing Shenouda.
