CAIRO: Arab League chief Nabil Al-Araby called for calm in Egypt, where deadly clashes raged for a third day on Monday, urging all political forces to press forward with the democratic process.

Al-Araby expressed his "grave concern" over the deadly clashes in Cairo’s Tahrir Square pitting police against demonstrators who want the end of military rule.

He called for "utmost restraint, while stressing the right of expression and peaceful demonstration," in a statement.

Al-Araby urged all political forces "to work for calm and return to the political process and move forward with the process of democratic change based on the principles of freedom, dignity and social justice on which the January 25 Revolution was founded."

Since Saturday, police and military forces in Egypt used batons, tear gas and birdshot to clear Tahrir Square of protesters. More than 20 have died and hundreds have been injured.

Egypt is on November 28 to hold its first parliamentary elections since protests ended president Hosni Mubarak’s 30-year rule in February, paving the way for the military to cede power to a civilian authority.
