CAIRO: A Cairo airport official says a prominent Bahraini activist has been barred from entering Egypt upon the request of a security agency.
Nabeel Rajab has been documenting human rights abuses in Bahrain during the island kingdom’s 14-month revolt by its Shia majority that seeks greater rights from Sunni rulers.
The official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the media, did not elaborate on the Wednesday decision.
Pro-democracy groups in Egypt say authorities have been cracking down on networking between regional activists. Rajab is the second Bahraini activist to face obstacles entering Egypt in recent weeks.
The daughter of Bahraini activist Abdulhadi Al-Khawaga, on a hunger strike to protest his detention, faced problems at the airport but was allowed inside Cairo 12 hours later.
