The police man who killed a runaway convict and then touched off a near-riot at the Al-Ahram Newspaper building has been arrested and jailed following calls for an investigation into the incident.

Officer Mohammed Abdel Ghani will spend the next four days in jail during a pending investigation for the killing. The officer shot Sayed Omar, a convict who attempted to escape in front of the Al-Ahram building, after he broke away from him as they both crossed the street. Abdel Ghani sought refuge in the building after members of Omar’s family attempted to grab the officer.

Despite eye-witnesses’ testimony that the family of the diseased convict attacked Al-Ahram building with Molotov cocktails and gun shots, the investigation revealed that gun shots were actually fired by Abdel Ghani while he was hiding in the Al-Ahram building. Abdel Ghani was not able to exit the Al-Ahram building until the arrival of the military police.
