In the wake of President Mohamed Morsy’s official inauguration, The Coalition of the Youth of the Revolution on Saturday announced its dissolution, citing the president’s election as a turning point in the country’s history.

Ziad El-Elaimy, a member of the executive office of the coalition, and a former member of parliament, said the organization had always promised to disband once Egypt had a democratically elected president who received a civilian handover of power from the Supreme Council of Armed Forces (SCAF).

He said the coalition is now meeting its promise. The coalition will be deactivating its Facebook page as well.

The coalitions’ members, who represent a large and diverse political spectrum, are said to be dividing themselves into three separate groups.

The first group will be members who are ideologically liberal, moderate, and Islamist, intending to support the National Front, a coalition established before the announcement of the Morsy’s victory.

The National Front vowed to back him in exchange for an inclusive national unity government rather than an Islamist one.

Some leftist members of the coalition have instead opted to join the Third Current, led by former Nasserist presidential candidate Hamdeen Sabahi, which was established to contest elections against Islamists and especially the Muslim Brotherhood.

The coalition stressed that the disbanding would not be the end of revolutionary youth, but instead the beginning of a new story.
