Israeli airstrikes targeting Hamas in Gaza city have killed one person and wounded another according to reports from Al-Shifa hospital officials in Gaza city this morning.
An attack earlier in the day on a Hamas compound east of Gaza city left three injured though Hamas has made no confirmation about that incident yet. Israeli Defence force officials claimed the Gaza city attack was in response to an imminent assault against an army patrol by Hamas militants.
This recent strike follows a wave of attacks in June that left nine Palestinians dead. The escalation of violence was so swift that Egyptian army officials intervened to break the spiral and enforce a fragile ceasefire.
Earlier this month the largest weapons seizure of the Egyptian Ministry of Interior was recorded when nearly 150 grad rockets and warheads were discovered headed for Gaza. In addition, a collection of Libyan rockets was seized in Mersah Matruh along Egypt’s north Mediterranean coast, allegedly bound for Gaza.
Despite Egypt’s security support along Sinai and Gaza, Israel has been uneasy since the election of President Mohamed Morsy. Israel’s leadership insists Hamas receives support and guidance from the party of the newly-elected President, the Muslim Brotherhood. Morsy, for his part, has maintained that he will preserve existing agreements with Israel.
