Prime Minister Dr Hesham Qandil has requested a daily report on the status of the nation’s electrical grid, in addition to estimates of consumption and production data.
In its report to the Prime Minister, the Ministry of Electricity and Energy (MOEE) said that of 218 power stations, 8 are currently suffer operational problems due to high summer temperatures.
The report indicates electricity consumption increased 12 percent in July, and that loads had not decreased by last Friday. However loads were reduced on Saturday by 800 megawatt-hours, as a result of the return of gas shortages at a number of electricity stations.
The report notes that average household’s electricity consumption has increased by 5 to 40 percent over the past several years. In contrast, the share of consumption by factories declined to 32 percent, from 38 percent several years ago.
In his meeting with the heads of electricity companies, the Minister of Electricity, Mahmoud Saad Balbaa, called for committing to load reduction periods as determined by control centres. He stressed that load reduction processes should not exclude certain areas at the expense of others, noting the electricity supply should witness a gradual improvement in the next week.
Saad also issued a resolution appointing Gaber El-Desouky, President of West Delta Electricity Production Company, as President of the Egyptian Electric Holding Company. In addition, the Minister appointed Medhat Ramadan, president of North Cairo Electricity Distribution, as a full-time expert for companies’ affairs by holding companies.
Awad Mansour, President of El-Beheira Company, is thought to be the most likely candidate to preside over the North Cairo Electricity Distribution Company.
