The new reshuffle within Telecom Egypt’s (TE) board of directors has been met by discord from the company’s workers, as calls for protests against the reshuffle after the Eid holidays have circulated on Facebook and twitter.

The reshuffle was applauded by Hani Mahmoud, Minister of communication and information technology, in a press conference last Thursday. Mahmoud stated that the reshuffle brought new blood to the company that will lead to more progress and development.

Telecom Egypt Rescue Front, founded by a group of the company workers, posted a statement on its Facebook page criticising the reshuffle. The group viewed the decision to maintain engineer Oukail Bashir as chairman of the board as a continuation of the same old faces who led the company to failure and losing customers.

On a separate note, Mohamed Abou Koresh, chairman of the independent syndicate of TE workers, told the Daily News Egypt that “the stand of the independent syndicate of TE workers is not personal. Our aim is to convey our vision, which as we believe would revitalise the company and improve the quality of the services that the company provides.”

Abou Koresh stressed that the independent syndicate of TE calls for amending the laws of communications so that a specific figure, out of the company’s net profit, is directed to the finance of scientific research. He also added that “we should focus on acquiring the knowledge of information technology from our foreign partners in order to promote innovation in the field of information technology.”

A source from TE, preferring to remain unnamed, told the Daily News Egypt that the company will hold a meeting right after the Eid holidays, where various issues including workers’ demands will be discussed.
