Burning trash ignited a natural gas pipeline in Alexandria on Monday in the area of Gomrok. Upon initial investigations by the governorate, no casualties have been reported. Authorities dispatched civil defence forces to close down the main gas line in hopes of controlling the fire.
Shorouk reported preliminary findings that show that in an effort to dispose of garbage, local residents burned piles of it in front of a neighbourhood police station, which is located next to a natural gas pipeline. The flames from the waste spread to the pipeline reportedly causing an explosion and an accelerated spread of flames.
Alexandria Governorate Security confirmed the incident to the Daily News Egypt, but declined to comment further on the matter.
