In an unprecedented move, Chancellor Mostafa Khater, First General Lawyer of the East Cairo prosecution office, referred a student who was held in custody to the criminal court, a few hours after being arrested for sexually harassing a girl in Al-Nozha district in Cairo.

The 20 year old defendant, Islam F., used his motorcycle to chase a girl through several streets in Al-Nozha district and then threatened her with a knife before he sexually harassed her. Hearing the girl screaming, some passersby rescued her, caught Islam F. and delivered him to the police station, where an incident report was filed before referring Islam F. to the prosecution office.

Investigations took place for a few hours before the decision to refer Islam F. to the criminal court was issued. He was referred to the criminal court on the charge of rape.

This comes after many activists have called for intensifying punishment of sexual harassment, due to the numerous harassment incidents that took place during the past Eid al-Fitr.
