Employees of Telecom Egypt have met the appointment of the company’s new non-executive chief officer, Omar El-Sheikh, with muted approval.
“I am neutral towards the appointment but hopefully he might meet our expectations,” the president of Telecom Egypt independent workers syndicate, Mohammed Helmy, said.
Omar El-Sheikh was public relations director at Vodafone Egypt, he has worked for several other large telecommunication and information technology companies. He was appointed to the new position following the resignation of Akil Bashir last week, according to state-run Al-Ahram.
Helmy said workers welcomed the new officer, but they remain sceptical of El-Sheikh. “He is a closed book for us workers and we know nothing of his management style,” he added.
Workers are looking forward to seeing their demands met, which include an increase in levels of workers’ satisfaction through improving working conditions, readjusting the regulations protecting human resources, and building a new managing structure as well as adjusting the financial one.
“El-Sheikh declared that he would handle workers problems, and we are looking forward to see his policies shortly” added Helmy.
“There is an urgent need to change both the marketing and sales strategies, since there is no harmony between them, which led Telecom Egypt to lose around half of its customers” said Helmy.
He pointed out that workers have met with Mohamed El-Nawawy, Telecom Egypt’s chief executive officer, telling him “its decision-making time.” Finally, Helmy expressed his hopes that El-Sheikh may alleviate some of the dull governmental routine clouding working conditions in Telecom Egypt.
