A high ranking security source confirmed to the Daily News Egypt that the incident which resulted in the death of 21 Egyptian Central Security Forces (CSF) conscripts on Monday involved foul play. The source said the CSF vehicle was shot at by gunmen, the shots were aimed at the tires which caused the vehicle to deviate from its course, roll down a steep hill near the eastern borders of Central Sinai. The victims were transferred to Al Arish General Hospital and Taba Hospital, where seven are currently in critical condition, and 29 others are being treated from various injuries. No conscript was shot.

Initial reports from the Egyptian media, including the governmental press agency MENA, claimed that the driver of the CSF vehicle lost control of the wheel and the incident was a mere accident resulting from bad roads in Egypt, however it was reported on Al Arabiya website and the Israeli Channel 10 that gunshots were fired.

Later on in the day, security official confirmed foul play, but opted to remain anonymous as he is not authorised to talk to the press.
