Four activists were attacked by unknown assailants in Helwan on Monday while promoting a march to commemorate last year’s Maspero massacre. Two members of the April 6 Movement were beaten and taken to hospital, while two other activists disappeared for half an hour before reappearing, visibly assaulted.
“We don’t know why they were angry,” said Mohammed Adel a leader April 6, who went on to speculate that “they were some people from the old regime, thugs.”
The fliers not only called for people’s presence at the Maspero rally, but also took aim at the members of the old regime who many see as responsible for the deaths of over two dozen Copts in clashes with the military.
“We are spreading fliers to people on the street about the protest in front of Maspero today [Tuesday] and calling that we need to arrest SCAF [the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces] and [Field Marshal Mohamed] Tantawi,” said Adel.
The April 6 movement announced on their
website that they would join in solidarity with Tuesday’s march in commemoration for what they say was killing “in cold blood on the orders of the military junta to kill and run over Egyptian protesters in front of Maspero with the armour of the Egyptian army.”
The group is echoing others in a call for the trial of many figures including, but not limited to, Tantawi, General Hamdy Badeen (chief of military police at the time,) and General Sami Annan (military chief of staff at the time.)
Adel wants to tell President Mohamed Morsy clearly to, “make a trial for everyone in SCAF.”
