Motorists have been stuck in traffic for hours as a result of the accident which is believed to be near Maadi in the Maadi-bound lane.
A group of teachers from the Cairo English School boarded a bus bound for Maadi at 4.10 pm and by 6.45 pm were still stuck in traffic.
They had been told an accident was causing the jam, one teacher said.
“Apparently oil is on fire across the road and as well as the smoke it’s dangerous and they’re trying to put it out.”
Twitter users have said a fuel tanker flipped around three kilometres from Maadi.
“Huge accident on Ring Rd towards Maadi. Fuel truck flipped and blocked the entire four lanes and gas spilled all over the road,” Twitter user Fawzeya elBorgwazeya said.
Menna Habib said, “oil truck flipped over on the Ring Road heading from New Cairo to Maadi. Oil is all over the road.”
Moa’taz Ali said the accident was “extremely dangerous” and urged motorists to avoid the area.
The teacher said that by around 6.50 pm, traffic had started to move though it was very slow.
“It’s moving but it’s at a snail pace. Over the last three hours we’ve moved a total of maybe 10 metres.”
Traffic had started to flow more freely in the opposite direction.
