The Ministry of Foreign affairs has called on the Libyan authorities to open an investigation into the death of an Egyptian citizen in the city of Tarhuna.

Spokesperson for the ministry, Amr Roshdy reported on Saturday that a message has been sent to the Libyan ministry of foreign affairs asking for an investigation into the death of Adel Mohamed Abdul Mawgoud, according to state-run news agency MENA.

Abdul Mawgoud’s uncle claimed that his nephew was tortured by Libyan police and died due to head injuries, according to state news agency Ahram.

His uncle reported that Abdul Mawgoud was detained after he refused to undergo a medical examination.

Roshdy confirmed that the Egyptian embassy in Libya sent a delegate to the hospital where Abdul Mawgoud was taken, according to MENA. The embassy also arranged for his body to be flown back to Egypt.

Abdul Mawgoud’s uncle travelled to Cairo airport to receive his nephew’s body on Friday, and take him back to Beni Suef, his home province, reported Ahram.

Roshdy stressed that the Egyptian embassy will continue to work with the Libyan authorities to ensure that justice is done on behalf of Abdul Mawgoud, reported MENA.
